A simple tool to calm you down and get present on a walk is the 5 4 3 2 1 Countdown to Calm.
Whenever you feel your anxiety rising, start the count down and find:
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
By the time you have counted down through these, you will be more aware of yourself, your surroundings and how you feel. Your breathing will have calmed. And you will feel less anxious. And of course, calming your own body can be a great benefit to your dog.
So, give it a go. You can do it at home or out and about and it will very quickly become your go-to destresser.
